Rescue Sierra Leone has initiated a sensitization program among communities
in Sierra Leone to form farmer cooperatives. The one community that has
agreed to participate is already practicing cultivation techniques for rice, maize,
and potatoes.
With the ultimate aim of creating more employment opportunities, Rescue
Sierra Leone is introducing vegetable farming and using the various water
sources available to their advantage. The farmers are mostly peasant farmers,
producing maize of all types, colours and sizes. Rescue Sierra Leone seeks to
provide them with farming opportunities that can generate fast money and
attract the youth. In addition, the maize produced can also be used for animal
feed. This initiative will create massive employment for all involved.
To create further employment opportunities rescue has proposed introducing
vegetable farming in the coming years.
