Helping Orphans

Compassionate and focus to serve.

Orphans both biological and social find solace in the numerous activities that bring them hope, and offer sustainable wealth of knowledge and renewal of strength. We collaborate and seek support from organizations to direct resources towards the help of orphans in our society.

The Challenge

In 1990, Ghana became the first country to sign the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and more. However, the rights of children are still violated. For example, children often engage in various economic activities to support themselves and are exploited by opportunists.

Individuals migrate from northern Ghana to Accra, the capital city, in pursuit of essential necessities such as clothing, shelter, and food, often leading to their displacement and they in the process become social orphans.

A significant number of these migrants are women who have fallen victim to child marriage. These young women encounter numerous challenges, including interruptions to their education, maternal health issues related to pregnancy and childcare, as well as the persistent struggle of poverty. Many are reluctant to return home for fear of being apprehended by their families and forced back into marriage. As a result, they choose to endure the hardships of city life rather than face the realities of their previous situations.

The solution

Rescue Volunteers addresses the socio-economic issues that lead to street children and orphan exploitation.  Capacity-building programs are designed to help in this regard.  Rescue Volunteers collaborate with selected families, government agencies and other private organizations that operate orphanages for care and advocacy.

Globally, Rescue relies on Section 19(3) of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which requires that governments that have ratified the Convention remove children in need of care and protection to a safe environment. – this has initiated the organisation’s efforts in care for social orphans in Sierra Leone and Liberia as well as Ghana in this regard.
